Abstract

This essay discusses what the combination of craft and science might look like for guiding the decisions of rank-and-file officers in two domains relevant to police practice: (1) advancing knowledge about what works, and (2) making decisions about the right thing to do. The goal is to provide some possibilities for reform that policymakers, practitioners, and researchers might wish to consider in their efforts to improve the police of the future. In a true marriage between craft and science, both have a hand in guiding the decisions of officers within the two domains.
