Balancing Budget Cuts and Service Demands: Police Agency Strategies

The December 2012 issue of Police Chief magazine includes an article, Cost Saving Efforts of the New Zealand Police: Opportunities for the USA, by Dr. Garth den Heyer, Chief Inspector, New Zealand Police Force, and Police Foundation Senior Research Fellow. In his article, Dr. den Heyer discusses challenges police agencies face in balancing decreasing resources while maintaining service levels in the wake of massive budget cuts.  With funding from the COPS Office, Dr. den Heyer is currently leading a Police Foundation study that is examining approaches designed and implemented by police agencies in the US and abroad that increase service delivery efficiency and effectiveness in a fiscally restraining environment.
