The United States has the highest rate of incarceration of its citizens of any nation in the world – nearly seven times that of European nations, according to a National Research Council report released on April 30, 2014. The report found that spending on keeping people in jail and prisons has increased nearly 400 percent at the state level over the past 30 years, with similar increases at the federal and local levels.
