Crime Analysis Mapping and Problem-Solving Training Through funding received from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), the Crime Mapping Laboratory provides technical assistance to law enforcement agencies that have received funding through various vehicles, but primarily to agencies that have received COPS funding to develop or expand upon existing mapping capabilities. Each year, eight training courses are conducted at the Police Foundation's headquarters in Washington, DC, and are offered at no charge. All travel and lodging expenses are the responsibility of course participants. In addition, onsite training and technical assistance can be provided for a fee. Now that many law enforcement agencies have obtained computer mapping technology and have an understanding of basic analytical concepts, it is time to help them move to the next stepintegrating crime analysis methodology and techniques into crime mapping in order to enhance community-policing and problem-solving processes. Therefore, our training program focuses not only on "how to map," but also on how to conduct problem-solving through mapping and how crime analysis can be used in decision-making. The Crime Mapping Laboratory offers two separate training courses: basic and intermediate. Each course lasts two days and is offered four times a year. The basic course covers issues such as general problem-solving and crime analysis concepts, law enforcement data, and basic mapping concepts and techniques. The intermediate course covers topics including non-traditional data sources, research methods and advanced statistics, and advanced spatial theory. A training schedule for the year can be obtained from us. If you wish to be contacted about the next series of courses, send an e-mail to jryan@policefoundation.org. Federally sponsored
crime mapping and analysis training is also provided by the Crime Mapping
and Analysis Program (CMAP). Based at the Rocky Mountain National Law
Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center in Denver, Colorado, CMAP
has an extensive training and technical assistance program. They can
be reached at 800-416-8086 or through their Web site at http://www.nlectc.org/cmap/. GIS and Crime Analysis Telephone Consulting Crime Mapping Laboratory staff are available to answer crime analysis and mapping questions over the telephone. We can answer most questions relating to the installation and use of GIS software including ArcView and MapInfo. For additional software and advanced crime analysis questions, we can provide referrals to other information sources. For those seeking to purchase mapping software, we will not make specific software recommendations, but we will provide information and guidance towards software selection.
